Cerebral Oxygenation Monitoring in Rats Under Isoflurane Anesthesia
Symposia - In-person/live
Speaker: Melissa Hoshi SugiuraIntroduction: Although monitoring of vital signs in small lab animals is critical to successful anesthetic outcomes, reliable measurement of the vital signs is challenging due to their size. To this end, we are developing a miniaturized optical imaging device based on the Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) technique for noninvasive measurement of the brain and peripheral tissue oxygenation and perfusion. Our goal is to develop a device to support safe and reliable anesthesia monitoring in small lab animals to improve animal welfare, ensure successful outcomes, and create reproducible research, which will ultimately aide in better knowledge of the living systems to enhance […]

Development of a Novel Technique for Ambulatory Left Ventricular Pressure Measurement in Mice
Symposia - In-person/live
Speaker: Steven KreuserIntroduction: Industry has seen a shift in the use of genetically modified mice for the evaluation of cardiac performance and function. There is significant interest in developing novel therapies to treat heart failure and measuring the effectiveness of compounds. Many models exist in larger species however, there are limited translational models for mice. To evaluate compounds in mice, often large animal models are scaled down to be utilized in studies. In this presentation we will discuss the development of a murine model of left ventricular pressure cannulation (LVP). Currently, echocardiography is routinely used to assess disease progression in rodent models of […]
