Senior Surgical Vet Technician-Research

Learns to coordinate activities involved in medical device studies, performs technical procedures in various areas, collects data and documents pertinent information in compliance with appropriate SOP’s, GLP’s and regulatory agency guidelines. Monitors animal health and welfare in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and help maintain facilities for AAALAC compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs minor surgical procedures, that consist of, but are not limited to:
    • Femoral cutdowns
    • Percutaneous sticks
    • Laceration repair
    • Laparotomy, thoracotomy
  • Working knowledge or ability to learn cardiac mapping and ultrasound
  • Proficient in animal prep for surgery, including intubation, surgical scrub (aseptic technique), monitoring animals under anesthesia and recovery
  • Proficient in monitoring anesthesia in a variety of species for multiple procedures including cardiac and interventional
  • Administers animal care and medical/treatments such as, but not limited to:
    • Prepares anesthesia sheets and medical records
    • Animal restraint/handling
    • Suture removal and Bandage removal and or replacement
    • Surgery treatments
  • Venous catheterizations placement on a variety of species including
  • Give urgent treatments as directed by veterinarian staff (IV/ SQ fluids, oxygen therapy (mask or intubation), analgesics.).
  • Successfully operates C-Arm and Cath Lab; knows and understands radiation safety
  • Acts as a Lead Technician for multiple studies assisting the project managers with planning and supplies
  • Assist veterinarians in with surgical procedures and repairs.
  • Reports all animal care concerns and becomes involved in the resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary
  • Demonstrates effective QC and documentation skills
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
