The Safety Pharmacology and Animal Research Center (SPARC) at Amgen is currently seeking a scientifically minded team player to join the SPARC Surgical Staff (SST) team. This dynamic team manages all aspects of in vivo health care for multiple species and provides a high level of scientific and technical aspects of surgery including operative support to multiple therapeutic areas for in vivo studies. This role will collaborate closely with members of the SPARC and Discovery Research teams to support a wide range of animal research and models through:

  • Establishing routine surgical procedures and learning new techniques to support animal model needs.
  • Demonstrating subject matter expertise and proficiency in veterinary research surgery, anesthesia/analgesia techniques in non-rodent (large animal) and rodent species with documented success in recovery procedures and post-operative care.
  • Recognizing technical issues and developing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Providing expertise in research bio-methodology techniques (compound dosing and sample collection), veterinary physiological monitoring and emergency medical triage.
  • Communicating, collaborating and consulting with veterinarians, peers and scientific investigators on the selection, design, optimization and production of in vivo models.
  • Administering veterinary health care and postoperative monitoring under the direction of the Attending Veterinarian.
  • Providing oversight of surgery facilities including inspection preparedness.
  • Providing leadership in the design, preparation and execution of research studies.
  • Presenting study results and communicating appropriate scientific information to colleagues and peers.
  • Reviewing and authoring technical documents for in vivo procedures and administering in vivo training.
  • Mentoring team members.
  • Performing clinical duties under the direction of veterinarians including occasional weekend calls.
  • Enhancing scientific/technical knowledge through lab-based practicums and reviews of advanced scientific literature.
  • Participating in IACUC activities including veterinary review of protocols and as an alternate for IACUC veterinarians.
  • Conducting on-site audits as needed for Amgen external business partners.

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree and 3 years of in vivo and animal surgical experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of in vivo and animal surgical experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or BS with 10 or more years direct experience performing animal surgery.
  • Five or more years experience in animal model development and surgery (regulated species) in a drug development setting.
  • Certified by AALAS/CALAS at the LATG/RLAT level.
  • RVT and/or certified by the Academy of Surgical Research (SRS, SRT, SRA).
  • Extensive knowledge and use in multiple database applications such as Study Log, Prism and Microsoft.
  • Exemplary managerial, communication, professionalism and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in a matrixed environment requiring partnership and collaboration with a broad audience of
    contributors in which communication and management skills achieve results.
  • Highly self-motivated, driven to excel, ability to work independently and prioritize responsibilities and projects.
  • Exhibits adaptability/flexibility to effectively work in an environment with changing priorities and urgency for project completions.
