The Staff Veterinarian reports to the Attending Veterinarian and participates in promoting day-to-day well-being and provision of clinical care for all animals used in the conduct of research studies within the test facility in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act. This includes monitoring and promoting animal well-being during all phases of the animal’s life and during use on research studies. Additional responsibilities of the SV include: rendering general clinical care, providing perioperative care for surgical cases, attending weekly rounds with veterinary technicians to overview progress of surgical/clinical cases, providing surgery and anesthesia personnel with training as needed, performing routine pre-study and on-study animal physical examinations/assessments, interacting collaboratively with surgical teams and study directors regarding animal welfare and responsible conduct of research activities, anticipating potential for adverse clinical complications that may arise from study and/or surgical procedures, enforcement of study animal removal criteria, providing periodic feedback to the AV on success of overall test-site animal welfare, and maintaining all required medical and drug-use licenses.
