Surgical Technologist/ Surgical Trainer

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for performing basic major surgical procedures and surgical support tasks to fulfill customer orders consistent with surgical services quality and productivity standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs basic major surgical procedures such as testicle removal (castration), ovary removal (ovariectomy) and vas deferens ligation (vasectomy).
  • Executes all related surgical tasks such as pre-operative health assessment, providing safe and effective anesthesia, administering and recording correct dosage of medications, monitoring intra-operative vitals, ensuring successful anesthetic recovery. In addition, maintains accurate, consistent, and complete surgical documentation.
  • Provides surgical support, such as post-operative animal assessment and treatment, stocking and sanitization of surgical areas, equipment maintenance, basic husbandry, and packing mice for shipment to customers.
  • Works to develop and refine surgical skills and performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work with rodents.
  • Ability to aseptically perform basic major survival surgical procedures on mice utilizing a microscope.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficiently advanced to successfully interact with people representing a variety of levels of sophistication.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Must have good working knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule (including rotating weekend/holiday coverage) and travel occasionally.
  • Ability to perform confident, responsible animal handling and a variety of biomethods.
  • Proven and consistent high level of attention to detail.
  • Able to prioritize task assignments and communicate progress with team.
  • Actively seeks to improve skills, facilitate learning, and understand job related items.

The Surgical Training Technologist/Trainer provides training, in both hands on and lecture format, in a wide variety of perioperative procedures and for JAX staff and non-JAX people at all levels, from animal care technicians to Ph.D. scientists. The incumbent may provide training in basic major surgical procedures. In addition to training, the incumbent is responsible for stocking and maintaining the surgical training lab and assisting in the development and refinement of the surgical techniques. The Surgical Training Technologist works to develop and refine their proficiency as a trainer, advance their surgical skills and expand their expertise in perioperative procedures (e.g. anesthesia, pain assessments, aseptic technique). This is a highly visible position; the incumbent must represent The Jackson Laboratory at the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Training: Provides and documents training in a variety perioperative procedures (e.g. anesthesia, pain assessments, aseptic technique, post operative care). May provide training in basic major surgeries including but are not limited to ovary removal (ovariectomy), testicle removal (castration) and vas deferens ligation (vasectomy).
Surgery: Performs basic major surgical procedures for surgical training or refinement/development purposes and executes all related surgical tasks such as pre-operative health assessment, providing safe and effective anesthesia, administering and recording correct dosage of medications, monitoring intra-operative vitals, ensuring successful anesthetic recovery. Additionally, maintains accurate, consistent, and complete surgical documentation.
Works to develop and refine training proficiency, advance surgical skills and expand expertise in perioperative procedures.
Assists in the development/refinement of surgical techniques. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with rodents.
  • Ability to provide mentorship and/or training.
  • Ability to aseptically perform basic major surgeries on mice while working under a microscope.
  • Must possess strong written and oral interpersonal skills to work in a high profile environment which permit the clear and effective exchange of information with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of technical skill.
  • Possess a strong attention to detail along with patience and flexibility to adjust teaching approaches and techniques that accommodate students with different capabilities, skill levels and levels of confidence.
