Veterinary Surgery Technician

VETERINARY SURGERY TECHNICIAN, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to work closely with veterinarians and animal care staff to provide exceptional animal care. Responsibilities include serving as a liaison between the veterinarians and research laboratory personnel; assisting with the veterinary medical care of laboratory animals and performing daily clinical rounds to evaluate animals for signs of illness; providing technical assistance and support for animal surgeries, including anesthetic monitoring; preparing animal patients for health examinations, research surgical procedures, dental procedures, wound management, diagnostic imaging, and euthanasia; preparing animal patients for and performing or assisting with medical and surgical procedures; providing clinical treatments such as administering drugs, fluid therapy, and convalescent care; filling and dispensing prescriptions and ordering and maintaining inventory; maintaining and stocking animal prep and surgical areas, including facility and instrument cleaning; maintaining accurate medical records and processing paperwork for billings; and managing the health surveillance program, including scheduling examinations and performing tuberculosis testing and the collection of blood and fecal samples for diagnostic evaluation.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent and three years’ related experience working with animals in a research setting with primary responsibilities in anesthesia and surgery. Must be able to adapt and respond to changing circumstances; work both independently and collaboratively with veterinary, animal husbandry, and research laboratory personnel; work with a large variety of species, including small mammals, birds, swine, and nonhuman primates; and remain stationary for long periods.
