In this lab, participants will learn the techniques of nerve transection and repair as well as femoral lateral condyle defect creation. Participants will learn the surgical methods to achieve successful outcomes in these surgical models as well as what to expect for the post-op care. If time allows, participants may have the ability to learn techniques for laparotomy (liver abrasion model) in rabbits as well as intubation. This lab will be beneficial to participants, such as DVMs, veterinary technicians or researchers, who are looking to expand their surgical capabilities or will be performing such procedures.
Course Fee – $800.00

#4 Dorsal Laminectomy and Craniectomy Procedures in Ovine
In the treatment of various diseases requiring laminectomy, surgeons have been challenged with friable blood vessels, inadvertent dural defects/lacerations, along with dural defects with the intention of repair. Various products are introduced into the preclinical phase to address these issues. In this lab, attendees will be able to participate in a procedural laminectomy of the L3/L4 region using the traditional approach. Those participating will have the opportunity to assist or perform everything from initial incision to dissection of muscle from the spinous processes to resection of the spinous processes and exposure of the dural sac along with descending nerve roots. This challenging procedure will expose participants to the intricacies of a traditional laminectomy and/or durotomy.
In this lab, participants will learn techniques for performing craniotomies and craniectomies. These methods are commonly employed in procedures such as the implantation of DBS leads, the placement of BCI devices, the creation of dural defects, and various other neuro studies. Participants will have access to a range of instruments frequently used in neurosurgery.
Course Fee – $800.00
8 seats
#5 Imaging Techniques in Swine
Participants will learn about the different imaging modalities that we use here at NAMSA. We will demonstrate Transthoracic, Transesophageal, Intracardiac, and vascular imaging. We will discuss, observe and learn techniques to encourage proper ultrasound imaging.

In this lab, participants will learn foundational microsurgery skills and how to implant telemetry devices to collect systemic blood pressure and ECG in the mouse. Participants will first learn basic microscope techniques and tissue handling via organ removal (e.g. nephrectomy, vasectomy) and targeted organ injection in the kidney. Then, participants will learn how to isolate the carotid artery and insert the blood pressure catheter, and they will learn how to secure the ECG leads in a modified lead II placement. Additionally, participants will learn best practices for catheter care, ECG lead preparation, explant method, and depth estimation for chronic patency.

Poster Session Guidelines:
For your poster to be effective, it is critical that the information is conveyed in a clear, concise, and organized manner. Quality photographs, diagrams, and illustrations are crucial elements to a successful poster.
The Awards Committee will be judging the posters on Thursday, September 18th and will present the Michael DeLeo award for the best poster. The poster presenter will be recognized on Friday, September 19th at the ASR Award Luncheon.
For posters evaluating commercial products, it is acceptable to state the evaluation and conclusion of the study. However, advertisements for or soliciting sales of a product through a poster presentation are not acceptable. Any posters intended for commercial advertising will be taken down.
Posters will be presented within the exhibit area or the hallway.
Poster Preparation
The usable space for each poster board measures 7 ft. 10 in. x 3 ft. 10 in. (2.35 m x 1.15 m). Please plan your display to make use of the whole board. Allow space (about 3 x 5 in.) in the upper right-hand corner for the poster number.
Handouts
Please provide 50 copies of a single-sheet handout containing pertinent information from your poster for observers. Two-sided printing is encouraged. Handouts should be clearly marked with your poster number, title, and authors of the presentation. Trays attached to the poster board will be provided to hold these handouts or provide a QR Code.
Set Up
“September 17th between 11:00 am – 4:00 pm” – Please do not leave tubes behind. Please take them back to your rooms.
All poster material should be completed before coming to the hotel. Transport of poster materials may be made easier if you use an inexpensive carrying case, available at most art supply stores.
Each poster is assigned a number (see list below) and each poster board will have the correlating number already attached to it. Find your corresponding poster board to hang your poster.
Presenter Attendance
An author (or co-author) of each poster is required to be present in the Poster Session on “September 18th between 5:15 pm – 6:00 pm” to discuss the poster material with interested individuals and the Awards committee.
